EPA And Hybrid Car Ratings: What You Need To Know

When it comes to hybrid cars, they’re probably the highest selling items in the car industry today. It’s only expected, though, considering the ratings that the EPA or the Environmental Agency are giving them. Charged with protecting and safeguarding the natural environment, it’s the EPA’s ratings that really matter when it comes to choosing the right hybrid vehicle to buy.

What It’s All About?

Wondering what EPA has to do with it? Most hybrids these days that are for sale to the general public have to have an EPA rating and it is this rating that will tell a consumer just how much fuel is saved when it comes to a hybrid’s mileage.

These ratings are usually translated by the consumer into fuel efficiency and thus monetary savings. But more important than that, the EPA determines which cars are the most fuel-efficient, which ones have the least amount of carbon monoxide emissions, and therefore which ones are the fittest for the environment in general. Of course, this does not mean that gas-powered cars are not allowed on the road. Basically, the EPA ratings on hybrids help consumers make the right choice in car purchases.

But What Is It Really All About?

The EPA ratings system has always been around. In fact, at some point the ratings had to change with the introduction of hybrid cars. The EPA has mandatory fuel-economy tests that have to be carried out on all cars, old and new, sold in the United States.

These tests are conducted on about 15% of all cars. One of these tests is on fuel economy which involves city and highway cycles to see the result on what kind of usage cars have when it comes to fuel consumption. For the year 2008, these tests have changed in many ways and the EPA has revised testing methods because of the introduction of hybrid cars.

Hybrid car ratings are now calculated using a dynamometer and these results will be shown on labels that will be attached to the vehicles to show what fuel economy estimates there are per model. These ratings make it easier for the consumer to pick the most fuel-efficient hybrid car.

These days, it’s no big secret that hybrid cars are the most fuel-efficient and it’s one of the reasons why these cars are becoming more popular. But fuel efficiency is a different story with all the model cars that are coming out of the assembly line from various car manufacturers. Some of the most fuel efficient includes the Ford Focus with an EPA rating of 24 miles in the city/35 miles on the highway to the gallon, the Honda Fit with a rating of 33 miles in the city/38 miles on the highway, and the Honda Civic with 30 miles in the city/38 miles on the highway. And these ratings are more different if those cars are automatics.

It’s these easy ratings that help consumers make the right choice, helping them to pick cars that suit their lifestyles. It is exactly why the EPA conducts its tests and comes up with hybrid car ratings, which is fitting since more people are now making the switch to the hybrid car.

Currently I came across some designs for making water explode but without a hydrogen electrolysis process. By generating a plasma electrical wave you can ignite water at rates of 4500 Meters a Second. It creates an extremely strong shock wave through the air. Another aspect of this theory is that you can mist water into your cylinders, or a cold water vapor. Then generate a plasma spark ignition with a standard spark plug or a firestorm plug of some sort. This video is evidence that a plasma ignition in water will make a shock wave and in turn the ability to explode water inside your cylinder. This Super Cell has the size you want it to have. If for your application you discover you need more output, you can stock it up and make a larger cell. I only use a 12 volts car battery as a power source. No PWM's or any other electronics is used in my experiments yet. I use pure baking soda as an electrolyte but as soon as I will find KOH I will use that. THIS CELL HAS 11 PLATES A CENTRAL ONE POSITIVE. 4 NEUTRALS LEFT AND RIGHT AND ONE NEGATIVE END PLATE ON EACH SIDE. The images in between on the video are from southern Switzerland. This disign is just a concept I tried to see how it turns out and what can be done. If anyone has a proven better design to share I will gladly look into it if you send me a picture or a design. The cell is of the type "dry cell", where the water between two plates does not touch the water between the next two plates, so there is no electrical dispersion. The plates are out of 1 mm thick 316L Stainless Steel and the neoprene gaskets are 3 mm thick. Both have been cut with laser. I have to find KOH to use as an electrolyte instead of baking soda.

This 3d cell took 25h of work. The outer (positive) tubes are 2mm thick and 42.4 mm diameter 316L stainless steel then there are 3 inner nutral tubes and the last smallest tube is 17 mm in diameter and is the negative pole and takes the electricity from the bottom up while the positive enters at the top down. I did mark the tubes with an arrow while cutting them and then assembled them with all the arrows looking upward. For lack of time I did not do any cleaning yet, I had no proper connections and I used a well water with high conductivity values and one tea spoon of backing soda for 1 gallon of water. Next thing I will do is to build a container and perfect connections and test the unit with some acceptable electrical equipment and usable indications about production and electricity consumpion
