Interest in Segway Scooters Heat Up Due to Rising Gas Prices

Paul Feeney didn’t commute with the Segway his parents gave him for Christmas in 2005 until he moved close to work this spring. The battery-powered, energy-efficient scooter makes the 1.4-mile commute fun, the 35-year-old Sun Microsystems sales representative said.

It also made his commute a lot less expensive.

When the Segway Personal Transporter came out in 2001, inventor Dean Kamen said the self-balancing vehicles would revolutionize short-distance travel. At first, however, they appealed mostly to police, mall security crews and airport personnel.

With gas prices escalating, sales are growing. One Segway dealer identified as one of its top five in the U.S. _ Riva Motorsports of Pompano Beach, Fla. _ sold almost 200 in 2006, 250 in 2007 and 175 in the first five months of 2008, said Riva spokesman Matt Sermarini.

“Anything that seems to be economical on fuel or doesn’t use fuel at all, people are definitely researching and buying,” Sermarini said.

Jared Cavalier, the Columbus Segway dealer who sold Feeney his scooter, said the increased interest has allowed him to open stores in Toledo and Cincinnati this year.

“These last few months have been fantastic,” Cavalier said. “We unbox them and they go out the door the same week.”

The self-balancing, standup scooters are getting more attention all around. Two “catcalls” are the most popular, Feeney said.

“People yelling, ‘Dork!’ and people yelling, ‘How much does that cost?’”

The Segway’s $5,000 price tag and its geekiness _ they were among many targets of Weird Al Yankovic’s parody “White & Nerdy” in 2006 _ are probably the biggest limits on its popularity, Feeney said.

James Houchard, an early customer in Ohio who now owns three Segways with his wife, said he tells people who stop him that he sees no difference in his electric bill.

“People always (wanted) to know how they work and what they do, but now I’ve had people ask about gas and say, ‘Is that a lot cheaper?’” said Houchard.

Houchard, 56, said they like the energy savings, but when he mentions what the scooters cost, it’s usually a surprise.

“Five-thousand dollars is an issue,” Bedford, N.H.-based Segway Inc. president and CEO Jim Norrod acknowledged _ though he predicted recent years’ sales growth rate of 40 percent to 50 percent to continue in 2008.

Dealers have seen a further uptick of 30 percent to 40 percent in walk-in traffic in the past month as people look for antidotes to expensive gasoline, according to Carol Valianti, a spokeswoman for Segway Inc.

The privately held company does not release sales data.

For now, the energy savings seem to be Segway’s strongest selling point.

Since buying a Segway in April, Kalispell, Mont., resident John O’Connor estimates, he has saved at least $100 on gas for commuting.

Enough charge to make the four-mile round trip to his job with telecommunications provider CenturyTel costs 4 cents, he said.

“Gas prices are going up, and it just turns my stomach. So I thought, ‘I’m done _ I’m not going to do it anymore,’” said O’Connor, 53. He and his wife are selling one of their automobiles.

Segways don’t completely cure the pain at pump. They need a charge after about 25 miles, can’t protect riders from the elements or carry much cargo and have a top speed of 12.5 mph.

“I could probably ride 10 minutes in 10-below-zero weather and not get so cold that I couldn’t stand it. If the trip was a lot longer, I probably wouldn’t want to do it,” said O’Connor.

Richard Doherty, an analyst with the Envisioneering Group research firm who has followed the Segway market for several years, said interest started rising in California when gas hit $4 a gallon there early this year.

“When SUV owners start driving slowly to save precious drops of gas, using a Segway looks more and more appealing _ especially for middle of the day and weekend trips near home,” said Doherty.

The vehicle’s price is coming into range, said Doherty.

“They’re saying that a Segway now costs about what you’d pay for the annual maintenance on many car models,” he said. “It just makes sense, if it’s fair weather and you can make your trips by Segway.”

5 Benefits of the Water 4 Gas System

Without question, the price of gas is getting more expensive and will probably double or triple in 5 years. That’s just the supply vs demand game. In other words cars will become more and more expensive to maintain – and run. But now, there is alternative but viable source of fuel – water. Not only is it great for our bodies, it’s great for the car too – Go figure. Here’s 5 great benefits of converting water 4 gas now-

    1. A simple technology (a small container) of converting water for gas can be installed by almost anyone and the parts will cost you only couple of dollars – but you might already have everything needed in your house.

    2. Tax Refundable – Did you know you are eligible for an IRS refund if you use this new technology? The government will actually pay you for using green-friendly technology. Burning water for fuel is not only great for gas mileage, but it helps save the planet and pays you too, it’s a win-win for you and your environment. Since 2005 the IRS could not afford to continue ignoring alternative fuel anymore, and started giving considerable rewards for “green” cars, “green” fuels and “green” upgrades. You can potentially get back up to $2,000 for a car, or up to $50,000 for a truck.

WAter 4 Gas3. Cheaper than a Hybrid Car – We’ve all heard and seen “hybrids”, but on the highway they are nothing but regular, inefficient cars. Their aerodynamics are a little better, but that’s true for many other cars that don’t have the Prius looks. It’s a great step forward though, if you can afford the price, because they make us think of alternative energy in more earthly terms.

    4. Although was is a great alternative source for fuel, you still need to make sure that your car’s battery that burns the water into H2O, is in a good working condition. A week battery may not adequately convert the water to gas.

    5. Very little water is needed, only one quart of water (tap water) provides over 1800 gallons of HHO gas which can literally last for months and significantly increase gas mileage and improve emissions quality.

Retailers that are Going Green are Doing Better then those that Don’t

As I predicted in an article several years ago, retailers, including the big guys, have gone eco-friendly. I saw it coming. I wrote about it. And, of course, it is a welcome change. The Ralph’s, Targets and Sams Clubs of the world, most likely, will never go fully earth-friendly, and merely offer sections in their stores rather than become another Trader Joe’s but that’s alright. It’s a very good sign.

Why? The obvious part is that anything one person or a group of people do, in even a small way, to leave shorter “carbon footprints”, the better. The signs of a “planet in trouble” have been with us for awhile. It is nothing new. Today, one does not need to be what was commonly referred to as a “tree-hugger” to do their part in pitching in to help in their own small way to help the earth, hence us, live longer and healthier.

I am an Internet retailer that deals in humor gifts and collectibles. I sell licensed images of my cartoon images on a myriad of products such as Tshirts, mouse pads, coffee mugs, and others. When I told my friends I was planning to open a 100% organic cotton (using nontoxic dyes) T-shirt shop as my latest online venture, a good many of them laughed. And not at my cartoons. Some felt I was “losing it”. The truth is, I am finding it. Though I don’t know if I will ever become fully green in my entrepreneurial pursuits, that is my goal. I still have a number of existing customers at other eshops who have supported us all these years, and they are a completely different market. My strategy is not to abandon them, but to cater to them, and slowly add more green products that I know many will try, and as time goes by, hopefully, go fully eco-friendly in all the stores.

I would consider myself “bad” if this opportunity to get into the “green sector” of business, not to have taken it. I had been attempting it for many years. I could not make a deal with a manufacturer that suited me. I wanted to find one in which I could provide an extremely high quality fabric, and have my cartoon images imprinted with natural dyes that would not harm the skin. There were a few our but there was always an issue or minimal purchases, quality control, and other obstacles always surfaced. Though I am a small businessman, I will not post products at prices that are not competitive. So I waited and I am glad I did.

Finally, thanks to a print-on-demand company called Zazzle.com, and contracts they have with American Apparel and Edun Organics (two of the best), I can offer the quality green tee and have it printed and drop-shipped anywhere in the world within 24 hours. Not bad, and at very competitive prices.

Americans, and citizens of other countries, love their T-shirts. According to a study, the average American has at least thirty designed tees, and almost one hundred percent have a “favorite one”. I know I do. We also are health-conscious people these days. We try to eat healthier foods, take organic vitamins, eat less red meat, consume less trans-fat. The skin is the largest and most absorbent organ the body has. Wearing non-toxic dye tees is smart. And wearing premium ones, paying about $5-6 more than one would for a regular cotton or cotton blend tee is even smarter. It looks sexier. It feels better. And one is doing their part to help the planet a little. To me, that kind of peace of mind is worth a lot more than a McDonald’s Happy Meal.

Hypermiling – Driving Techniques the Cool Kids Use!

Ok so what is Hypermiling? (Hyper Miling)

In a nutshell it’s fuel efficient driving to save gas and get better MPGs out of any vehicle or it could be looked at as the art of conservative driving to save gas and getting 30% better gas mileage on average.

Some drivers have been able to modify their driving habits to exceed the EPA estimates and go where no man has gone before in terms of squeezing every possible mile out of a gallon of gas. Many have become so talented at driving with minimal use of fuel that they have gotten 100 miles per gallon out of their vehicles and more. Through trial and error, hypermilers have learned certain extreme driving techniques that will drastically lower fuel consumption.

Here are some quick tips to make you a Hypermiler. :)

        1) Drive a stick shift car or truck (duh)
        2) Park and ride (bicycle)
        3) Attend a driving clinic
        4) Clean junk from your trunk
        5) Let the most efficient driver drive
        7) Remove unused roof racks
        8) Check tire inflation regularly
        9) Track your fuel consumption
        10) Use a fuel consumption display
        11) Stop speeding
        12) Coast instead of braking
        13) Use of Cruise Control
        14) Find a route that’s easy on your vehicle
        15) Turn off the car before putting it in park
        16) Don’t leave the car running if not necessary
        17) Get an oil change when you should
        18) Balance those tires
        19) Ridge Riding: If you want to save gas during or after a hard rain, hug the right side of your lane, or the shoulder if you’re already driving in the far right lane, to avoid driving in the puddles created by other drivers.
        20) Downhill run: If you’re driving downhill, take your foot off the gas pedal and coast all the way down until you absolutely must brake or give your car a little more gas.
