The New 2008 Hybrid Cars

The 2008 auto year is officially under way, and new models of 2008 hybrid cars are now or will soon be available to consumers. For those unfamiliar with hybrid cars, let’s briefly explain why they differ from regular vehicles and why environmentally conscious consumers prefer hybrid vehicles.

Hybrid cars (and trucks) are designed to reduce emissions by having at least two seperate power sources. Basically, instead of relying on burning fuel for all its power, a hybrid vehicle typically uses both an energy storage system in addition to gasoline, thereby expending less gasoline and less emissions.

Specifically, an energy storage system in a hybrid vehicle will in effect recognize when fuel is being wasted and will recycle energy to power the car or truck. Wasteful car and truck actions such as idling, traffic stops, etc. are recognized by the energy storage system and the gasoline burning engine is stopped. City drivers in particular notice a greater fuel economy with hybrid vehicles due to the constant stop and go flow of heavy city traffic.

What You Should Expect To See In 2008:

New Hybrid Sedans:

Chevy Malibu rolls out a new hybrid model as a 2009 offering late this summer or early fall. Others with similar plans include the Ford Fusion and Saturn’s AURA in their Green Line. Also expect a new version of the Mercury Milan as a hybrid.

Crossovers and SUV’s Go Hybrid:

Expect Saturn to roll out the VUE as the newest member of their Green Line, offering half the emissions of their regular model. Also with new models will be the Chevy Equinox, Toyota Prius, and Toyota Sienna.

Hybrid Full Size Trucks and Hybrid Pickups:

New from General Motors in the hybrid pickup and full size truck category will be the Chevy Silverado, a full size pickup expected to debut as a 2009 model. Also from GM and another 2009 model will be the GMC Sierra, also a pickup.

Other 2008 Hybrid Car Happenings:

Of interest is the first hybrid car from China, the Roewe 750, a midsize car. Chinese car manufacturer SAIE is producing the hybrid 750, their version of the United Kingdom’s Rover 75.

Expect to see even more hybrid car and hybrid truck model introductions as we move into the 2009 and 2010 model years. The hybrid car and truck market is ever expanding, and auto manufacturers are more than happy to meet the demand.

Why Choose Half Water Half Gas As A Hydrogen Conversion Guide?

    by Harold Winslow

Half Water Half Gas is the latest addition to the series of different Do-It-Yourself hydrogen car conversion kit guides that are now available on the internet. So how can this new guide hope to have a chance against the more popular Water 4 Gas and Run Your Car On Water? And also how does it compare to the already popular and well used guides?

The people who came up with this guide are most likely marketers, I can say this because I know for a fact that “ozzie” who came up with the original guide Water4Gas was a marketer who used the plans for the conversion and turned them into a product. The thing is, that is not really important as long as it is providing the consumer with what they are looking for. I believe the devolopers of this product were very smart, because they included video as a format for the instructions for conversion.

This factor really does make it a lot easier for many people. Because of the way that different folks learn and grasp the information differently, by covering different ways of learning, the developers of Half Water Half Gas have really done a great job.

So in terms of comparison to the other guides, how does Half Water Half Gas shape up? Well at the price of $67 it comes somewhere right in between the price of the other two main guides (Water 4 Gas at $97, and Run Your Car On Water at $49.97). The detail of the guide is very good, as I mentioned it uses video as a means of instruction, so that allows one to really get a very clear idea of the process.

How easy is this guide to implement? Well when it comes down to it, this guide along with pretty much all the other guides use the same process of implementation, just with slightly different approaches. Half Water Half Gas does turn out to be pretty easy to implement. You might find it hard if you have no idea how to do any maintenaince on your car. If you aren’t comfortable doing basic maintenance, I recommend getting a professional to install it for you.

The customer support for this guide while not as good as Water 4 Gas, was still responsive within 48 hours, and did seem to understand how to help during any hiccups. That being said, because of the nature of having on screen visuals (the video) as instruction, far less people would be relying on customer support with the use of this guide.

For what you are paying for this guide, I think the value is pretty good. I think that almost anyone with the intention of installing their own hydrogen conversion kit would be pleased with this product. That being said all of these products are sold through ClickBank, and in my own experience when I have not been happy with something I bought it was a very minor deal to just get my money back.

If you are having any doubts about the fact that hydrogen fuel technology works, just ask yourself, do you think that the multimillion dollar companies would want to invest millions of dollars into this technology if it did not work? No, its obvious that this technology is valid, and its only because of corruption and greed that it stayed under the table for so long.

www.jetman.ch latest news on Yves Rossy's official site! Follow his channel www.youtube.com The Jet Man, Yves Rossy, a former Swiss military pilot, designed and built a deployable 3-meter wing, holding kerosene fuel for 2 jet engines (as of May 2008 FOUR turbines on a 2.5m wing!!) fixed to the tips and attached it to his back. Rossy launched from an airplane and flew for 4 minutes, traveling over 100 mph, landing by parachute. www.jet-man.com OK here's my attempt at translation (if you can, please correct!): 00:16 (VIDEO START) 00:20 (German) Further, further away from the car 00:22 Yes 00:24 (French) Towards the drain 00:25 There? 00:26 Yep 00:33 ('SCOTLAND THE BRAVE' RINGTONE) 00:48 So, the idea is, as we see here, there's the fuel, the smoke cartridges, and the jet engines underneath, for horizontal flight. 01:00 In fact, the Flying Jet Man, that's the idea. And to do that we've developed this folding wing, taking into account the space available in the plane, because we don't have much space. A wing of 3 meters would not fit in the plane without being folding. 01:19 It's nearly a mini-airplane, except that, well, I'm the fuselage. So there's fuel, batteries, gas for starting the jet engines, oil is in the kerosene for lubricating the engine. I have a little handle for moving the ailerons so I can go up and down, so I've got all the controls just like a plane, and like I said I'm the fuselage with two jet engines up my backside! 01:56 The goal - horizontal flight ...
A Gallon of Gas for a Quarter?

A gallon of gas for about a quarter? Let's do the time warp again and find out how it's possible. A bit of background: Before 1965 American quarters (half dollar coins, dollar coins, etc.) were 90% silver. They were a medium of exchange like today's quarters but also had the intrinsic value of the silver they were made of. When you were given a quarter (pre-1965), you were given something of actual value--specifically it had the value of 0.18 oz of silver. The government no longer makes money with intrinsic value (because then they couldn't steal the value of your money via inflation) and today quarters are made mostly of copper. A quarter today is worth only whatever "25 cents" will buy and that continually changes for the worse as the government increases the money supply over time. If you want to know more, read the following free e-book at mises.org: "What Has Government Done to Our Money?" www.mises.org You can check the value of metals in various coins yourself here: www.coinflation.com If it bothers you that around .25 of buying power has been stolen from every quarter by the government since the 1960's and you want to do something about it consider supporting people like Ron Paul.

Collection of the worst Nuclear Fusion and Fission and Hydrogen bombs... I had to change the song as the owners claimed copyright on it which i think is absurd, but i think i Changed it to Evanescence using the Youtube auto change program. Some dude called nikolai sent me this, thought I would post it: A falling bomb. Interesting memories of the war stories my family told me about. My mother, grandmother, and aunt used to live in Berlin Germany beginning in 1920's after they have fled the Bolshevik Revolution. During the 1940's, my maternal side of the family recounts how the radio announcer would get on air and warn the general public of the forthcomning allied air raid. The first words out of his mouth were: "Kucoo...Kucoo...." and then he went on to tell his listeners to take shelter. My uncle was up on the roof with bags of sand and a shovel in hand in case they dropped a bomb with a phosphorous fuze (Water won't put out the burning phosphorous, but sand will). That uncle was shortly arrested by the SS for being politically outspoken. He spent the remaining four years in a POW Kamp called Sachsenhausen. My aunt told me how those bombs would whistle through the air as they fell and wrecked havock. One time, my mother discovered a blockbuster which did not go off in the backyard. The German military was summoned and they had ...

Massive solar eruptions could threaten our high-tech society. The year was 2003... with Halloween approaching... 93 million miles away... an angry sun began to vent its rage. Dark regions, called sunspots, appeared unexpectedly on its surface... a sign of rising tension within. It had been three and a half years since the sun last erupted in fury... ...at the peak of an 11-year cycle of solar flare-ups. Back then, we got ready for it... by shutting down satellites that were vulnerable to high levels of radiation. But no one expected this. In what should have been a low point in solar activity, the sun erupted in a series of massive explosions, called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. Electrified gas clouds weighing billions of tons raced outward. Solar telescopes recorded the action... The largest emission of solar x-rays ever seen. The hottest flares, at tens of millions of degrees... And the fastest... reaching speeds clocked at six million miles per hour. The sun became a giant plasma weapon... more potent than any in science fiction... and pointed right at our home planet. On Earth... the Halloween storms produced some of the most spectacular auroras ever seen at the north and south poles. They also brought jolts of electricity that caused power outages in Sweden, and disrupted airline navigation. In space, these storms damaged 28 communications satellites, and destroyed two. And they didn't stop there. As the energetic surge swept past Mars, it was so strong it burned ...
    Grilling Lobster Tails

Grilling lobster tails is quick and easy thanks to this easy method from Chef Jason Hill. Many people are intimidated on how to cook lobster, but grilled lobster tails are an impressive and simple way to go. If you have a Maine lobster or other variety of lobster, simply split the tails in half and rinse under cool water. Lobster tail recipes are best when made with a scampi-style butter, garlic and parsley sauce. Hill's recipe for grilled lobster tails uses this method, first by cooking lobster tails on the grill, and then by finishing them off in a saute pan. Side dishes for lobster dinner include garlic mashed potatoes and grilled corn on the cob. See Hill's accompanying recipe for grilling corn on the cob. We hope this is one of the best lobster recipes you'll try! Following are the ingredients you'll need: 2 (8 oz.) lobster tails 2 tablespoons chive oil or extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon garlic-shallot puree (or 2 crushed garlic cloves) 1/2 stick butter 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley 2 cups water (use as needed) Salt and pepper (as desired) First, lay the lobster tail on its back. With your knife, set it on the tip of tail. Push knife down into meat and crack through the back of the shell. Gently pull meat apart from the shell, but not completely. Rinse lobster under cool water. Pat dry. Drizzle chive oil or olive oil over the meat. Cover and put in the refrigerator in 30 minutes. Preheat your outdoor gas grill. Place lobster tails, meat side down, on the ...

DANGEROUS DEMONSTRATION! If you wear a ring, you might shatter the bottle and slice your hand. And sometimes the whole bottle breaks into razor-edged shrapnel. ----- It's quite easy to blow the bottom out of glass bottles... if you know the secret. Even wine bottles sometimes work. But not cider jugs, since the pressure peak is too small if the square inches is large. VACUUM CAVITATION BOTTLE That vacuum bottle at the start? I made it as follows. (DANGER, explosion hazard!) Find a bottle with a lid, one which is short enough to fit inside a microwave oven. Get an ice cube, save it for later. First de-gas some water by boiling it on the stove for about half an hour. Fill your glass bottle almost full with the boiling hot water. (Careful! The bottle may shatter!) Place a wooden stick inside, then cook it on high in your microwave oven until it starts boiling again (several minutes.) Now remove the wood stick and place the lid loosely on top of the bottle. Cook on medium for several minutes, this replaces the air with live steam as well as heating the metal lid to 100C. Now using gloves, suddenly pop open the microwave door, grab the bottle and screw down the lid, then place the ice-cube on the lid, and put it in the oven for safety. DANGER, THE BOTTLE MIGHT EXPLODE AT THIS TIME! Leave the bottle alone and stay far from the oven. With luck it will cool down without any problem, and the air above the water will have been replaced by a good vacuum.

Exhaust Heat Utilisation Device(EHUD). ---------------------------------------------------------- Yes. That is what I would call it and that may be the only name it should be called. What about Heat Energy Assistance Tube(HEAT)? That also sounds right. Paul Pantone's "GEET Engine"(called "Endothermic Reactor" in its previous incarnation) is demonstrated here, including claims of running GEET on Urine, Soda or Water; discovery of new elements not found in periodic tables, MIT's theft of his "invention", Nobel Prize for him and his wife, etc. Paul was a Highschool dropout, a carpenter who gaveup his carpentry job after a serious leg injury. Check ... www.geet-pantone.com - check the "Marin Independent Journal" Article - After the loss of his primary source of income from carpentry, he started working fulltime on this GEET idea - Blending the exhaust fumes containing heat and carbon-dioxide with water and synthesize a fuel out of it, a technically impossible dream, using a steel rod, which he called "Plasma Electrode". The name Endothermic Reactor was so named for this quest to create the ultimate holy grail in energy. One of GEET's claim is that this will allow a car to run for 100 to 120 miles on a single gallon of gas. Some believers of this technology have reported 80 to 82 miles(but none of them verifiable or demoed to any scientists or engineers) GEET is also manufactured as SPAD in FRANCE and other european countries with some modifications. It's the ultimate buddy movie. Forty years ago, on November 19, 1969, astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landed on the moon in one of the most important of the Apollo flights. This video shows them making a pinpoint landing on a treacherous lunar surface, finding rocks, and generally having a blast. The program features an interview with Pete Conrad, filmed a year before he died in a tragic motorcycle accident in 1999. Credit Space.com with editorial assistance. Earth.... November 14th, 1969. Three astronauts... with spacesuits, food, water, and a battery of scientific and communications equipment... were bound for the moon. Thousands gathered at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, including President and Mrs. Richard Nixon, to witness the historic launch. The Saturn V rocket that would carry them into space was theoretically designed to launch in any weather... and on this day it was raining. The mission's commander, astronaut Pete Conrad, would say later: "The flight was extremely normal, for the first 36 seconds." Audio: 10, 9, 8, ignition sequence start, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, all engines running... liftoff. The five engines of the Saturn 5's huge first stage burned through 5 million pounds of liquid oxygen in just two and a half minutes, boosting the spacecraft 42 miles up... and 58 miles out over the Atlantic. Racing through the stormy environment, the rocket generated a lightning bolt that traveled down its highly conductive exhaust trail. Another bolt hit 16 ...

Alright, it's been a couple of years since I posted this, and I've read some of the comments, so I think it's time to post some counterpoints to the most common statements. Some of you have mentioned putting the fire out with the lid. That was the first thing we did (before the video). The lid warped immediately and did nothing to smother the fire. You can see the guy holding the lid with tongs because it was still too hot to touch with bare hands from covering the fire moments before. Others have mentioned baking soda as the solution. We tried that, as you can see at the beginning of the video. As it turns out, baking soda is flammable at that high of a temperature. We would have needed a tremendous amount of it to put this fire out, and all we had was the one large box. Call the fire department? Turn your sound on and you'll hear the phone call. The video ends when I went to move my car so the fire department could get in. Don't put water on a grease fire: It's important to note WHY you've been told this since childhood. Water boils at a much lower temperature than oil burns, so it will splash oil everywhere when used on a grease fire. Since that oil is already on fire, it will spread the fire to whatever it lands on. As you can see in the video, my friend's dad very methodically wet the deck to reduce the chance of the fire spreading before wetting a rug and using it to smother the flame. He then kept the rug wet to prevent it catching. You can tell from the tremendous ...

Hydrogen Oxygen has an adiabatic flame temperature of about 3000 degrees kelvin, thats about half the temperature of the surface of the Sun. Question is... just for fun, can you put that into a pop bottle! Previously I've shown other fuel air burns, one similar to that used in most internal combustion engines (butane air), and the other as one of the more common rocket fuels (hydrogen oxygen). Both release lots of energy when they burn, which is of course what makes them suitable as fuels. The hydrogen oxygen burn though is particularly fascinating as it only produces water as an 'exhaust', further it produces very little water! Indeed to fill a bottle with hydrogen and oxygen you only need to turn about 0.5g of water into H2 and O2, and of course when you burn it you only recreate that half gram of water. To make life even more interesting, to actually do the electrolysis I use a 12 volt Li-ion polymer battery, very similar to those used in most laptops today, simply so folk can visualise in a very simple way the energy content in these everyday objects. Indeed the energy content is significantly higher as only a fraction of the energy I draw from this battery actually goes into creating the H2 and O2, while probably the majority goes into heating up the electrolysis solution. Now when H2 and O2 burn, there is actually a reduction in the number of molecules of gas, which would, if all other conditions were the same actually produce a reduction in pressure, however the ...

30/09/09: A powerful earthquake hits Indonesia that left 75 dead. It strucked off in he city of Padang, Sumatra Island. The death toll was likely to rise further as many buildings, including hotels, schools and shops had collapsed, Vice President Jusuf Kalla told a news conference in Jakarta. TV footage showed devastation, with piles of rubble and smashed houses after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake, which caused widespread panic across the city of 900000 people. Rustam Pakaya, the head of the health ministry's disaster centre in Jakarta, said "thousands of people are trapped in the rubble of buildings." Metro Television reported the roof of Padang airport had collapsed. The quake was felt around the region, with some high-rise buildings in Singapore, 440 km (275 miles) to the northeast, evacuating staff. Office buildings also shook in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre cancelled an earlier tsunami alert. "Hundreds of houses have been damaged along the road. There are some fires, bridges are cut and there is extreme panic here," said a Reuters witness in the city, who also said broken water pipes had triggered flooding. His mobile phone was then cut off and officials said power had been severed in the city. A resident called Adi later told Indonesia's Metro Television there was devastation around him. "For now I can't see dead bodies, just collapsed houses. Some half destroyed, others completely. People are standing around too scared to ...

New Prius Exclusive @ 2009 NAIAS

MORE DETROIT AUTO SHOW COVERAGE: www.edmunds.com We've imagined the 2010 Toyota Prius with cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries and plug-in capability, and now the real thing is here at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. And although the production version of the 2010 Toyota Prius isn't radically different from the second-generation Prius, it should bring some significant upgrades when it goes on sale in late spring 2009. The most obvious of these is the adoption of a larger-displacement, 1.8-liter inline-4 engine with variable valve timing (intake valves only). Running on the Atkinson cycle, the engine makes 98 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 105 pound-feet of torque — a big increase from the 76 hp and 82 lb-ft supplied by the second-generation car's 1.5-liter engine. The 1.8-liter uses cooled exhaust gas recirculation to enhance fuel economy (reintroducing cooled gas back into the intake manifold reduces pumping losses), and an electrically driven water pump eliminates the need for a power-robbing serpentine belt. Toyota says total system power for the 2010 Toyota Prius is 134 hp, meaning that an additional 36 hp is coming from the car's nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The 2009 Prius had a battery pack rated for 28 hp. The front transaxle that houses the car's electric motors and planetary continuously variable transmission is lighter this year, and Toyota says this reduces torque losses by up to 20 percent. An improved cooling system for the inverter allowed Toyota's engineers to ...

This video is a continuation of the first half of "The Real Mario-Kart" which is a collection of clips of me go-carting at my friend Darlene's farm. The beginning of this video shows the 5HP engine that replaced the original 3.5HP engine on the black go-cart. The 3.5HP blew at least three piston rods before it was finally put out of service. The 5HP came off an air compressor that sat outside for some time with the spark plug missing. Water made its way into the combustion chamber and rusted the gas valve open. The valve was pounded down with a hammer and then the engine was rebuilt. Amazingly the engine starts and still does, but it drinks oil.
Environmentally Correct Oil Spill Cleanup Solution with Hay & Straw

In this video posted by the Walton County (FL) Sheriff's Department, Darryl Carpenter, Vice President of Florida-based CW Roberts Contracting and sub-contractor Otis Goodson, shows how hay, hay grass and straw can be used as a very effective environmentally correct oil spill cleanup solution. In a scene reminiscent of a primetime cooking show, the Carpenter and Goodson video shows how Coastal Bermuda and Bahia hay could be scattered over the surface of the ocean with hay blowers to absorb the oil. To start, the two men pour oil into two large pans of water, stir in the hay, add a little "wave action," then skim off the oil-soaked hay. The audience watching the Walton County video included representatives from BP (British Petroleum), the Coast Guard and the Sheriff's office. CW Roberts then asks BP and the Coast Guard for the chance to do a 10-acre live demonstration in Gulf waters. They were told that approval has to come from higher up, but can they say no to this environmentally correct oil spill cleanup solution, with just Hay and Straw? "We work along the whole Gulf of Mexico coastal area in Florida," says CW Roberts president, Charles Roberts. "We have everything mobilized. We can have boats and equipment on the water in less than a half-day. We have been getting calls from all over, from people who want to supply the hay. We want to be given the chance to see if it works. If it works on 10-acres, then give us a bigger assignment." CW Roberts, a 700-employee ...
How to Test if Fertilizer Has Nitrates in it
    2:36
    Views: 34,220
In this video we show you how to test if a fertilizer has nitrates rather than urea or ammonia as its nitrogen source. The idea is quit simple, in a strongly acidic solution the nitrates will behave like nitric acid and dissolve copper metal releasing nitrogen dioxide gas. Looking for this gas is a strong indication for the presence of nitrates. WARNING: these reactions produce toxic nitrogen dioxide gas, this must be performed outside or in a fume hood. To perform the test, simply mix some of your fertilizer with water to dissolve the nitrates and then mix it with hydrochloric acid. Then add in some copper metal. The reaction is very slow to start up unless you heat it. A nerdy way of heating it on the spot without using a heater is to add a small ball of aluminum metal, don't use too much or it will go out of control. Stir the mixture as the aluminum dissolves to distribute the heat evenly. After the mixture is heated, place a glass container over the mixture to keep the gases in. If nitrogen dioxide is forming the distinctive brown nitrogen dioxide will fill the container. And that's how you can tell if there are nitrates in your fertilizer. If you want to test for ammonia (in case you have ammonium nitrate) just mix some fertilizer with half as much sodium hydroxide and add a little water to cover it. If it starts bubbling and releasing ammonia gas then it contains ammonia. Our website www.nurdrage.com For more information on the chemistry visit the web page at sites ...

Hypermiling – Driving Techniques the Cool Kids Use!

Ok so what is Hypermiling? (Hyper Miling)

In a nutshell it’s fuel efficient driving to save gas and get better MPGs out of any vehicle or it could be looked at as the art of conservative driving to save gas and getting 30% better gas mileage on average.

Some drivers have been able to modify their driving habits to exceed the EPA estimates and go where no man has gone before in terms of squeezing every possible mile out of a gallon of gas. Many have become so talented at driving with minimal use of fuel that they have gotten 100 miles per gallon out of their vehicles and more. Through trial and error, hypermilers have learned certain extreme driving techniques that will drastically lower fuel consumption.

Here are some quick tips to make you a Hypermiler. :)

      1) Drive a stick shift car or truck (duh)
      2) Park and ride (bicycle)
      3) Attend a driving clinic
      4) Clean junk from your trunk
      5) Let the most efficient driver drive
      7) Remove unused roof racks
      8) Check tire inflation regularly
      9) Track your fuel consumption
      10) Use a fuel consumption display
      11) Stop speeding
      12) Coast instead of braking
      13) Use of Cruise Control
      14) Find a route that’s easy on your vehicle
      15) Turn off the car before putting it in park
      16) Don’t leave the car running if not necessary
      17) Get an oil change when you should
      18) Balance those tires
      19) Ridge Riding: If you want to save gas during or after a hard rain, hug the right side of your lane, or the shoulder if you’re already driving in the far right lane, to avoid driving in the puddles created by other drivers.
      20) Downhill run: If you’re driving downhill, take your foot off the gas pedal and coast all the way down until you absolutely must brake or give your car a little more gas.

        Tips on Obtaining Cheap Gas

Saving on gas is quite a task these days, as so many must travel to places of work and to obtain higher education. The high prices paid at the pump aren’t necessary, however, as there are indeed a few ways that consumers can save money by following a few gas guidelines and tips.

The most common way to save gas is to not use things such air conditioning or heating in a vehicle, as this puts further strain on the engine that leads to higher gas consumption. Interestingly, this isn’t always the case on highways or interstate travel. High drag caused by lowered windows will reduce a car’s ability to be aerodynamic- and thus lower its gas efficiency. Therefore it’s best to use air conditioning at higher speeds.

It’s no wonder that older folk seem to have to get gas less than others. This might be due to the fact that they travel less, but also because the elderly tend to drive slower on average. Driving slow and responsibly will increase fuel mileage, as it helps keep unnecessary strain on the engine. Slow acceleration and braking habits also help to give vehicle owners increased fuel efficiency.

Even though car manuals sometimes claim that cars should be run on the highest grades of fuel, this is not true. Cars that can accept low grades of fuel should, since this gives cheaper prices for just about the same amount of mileage. Purchasing gas with a higher octane rating may help improve mileage, but not enough to actually justify the price difference.

Two other options help dictate gas mileage: weight and tire inflation. Weight, for instance, might be putting extra drag on one’s engine, or even causing a car to be less aerodynamic via a lopsided vehicle. Excess weight can also put more strain on tires, which should always be checked for accurate inflation. A tire that is not properly inflated will always decrease gas mileage considerably.

As a last note, those who live in colder climates or experience cold climates at winter should keep in mind that warming up a car shouldn’t be a lengthy process. While it is nice to warm up a car for 10 minutes in order to get in warm for entry, this wastes gas and is inefficient. Cars should be warmed up for about a minute or two, and then it’s perfectly fine to start driving in colder weather.

        Final Thoughts

In the end, getting around the high gas price hikes isn’t going to be easy. But being economical and thrifty on the subject can save consumers quite a bit of money over the years. Until alternative fuels can be found, and renewable “green” sources of energy may be used, following the previously mentioned tips becomes important for both our environment and wallets.

Fuel Economy Tips for your SUV

suvWhen you think about a vehicle specified to optimize fuel economy, the SUV does not necessarily jump to mind right away! Quite the contrary, they are heavier on gas in general (at least that is the perception of most, including drivers, fellow road-users and owners).

Managing the costs and rising prices of gas at the pumps is a top priority for most these days. You just have to look at some of the automakers struggling in this category to attract any consumer interest right now, due to the low SUV fuel economy value proposition they provide. For most (even prospective buyers) drivers of SUV’s the comforts afforded and the cost you have to fork out in terms of less miles per gallon or lower fuel economy is just not worth it anymore. It hurts at the pump to fill up your SUV.

Optimizing your SUV fuel economy is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity to avoid the pain at the pump. How specifically a vehicle or even sport utility is specified out and driven is how you get the best fuel economy overall. You need the best of both these worlds – both design and use to make the most of SUV fuel economy.

Many driving and handling tips in general, will also improve the fuel economy of any other vehicle you drive, but even more-so on the SUV’s.

The HUMMER HX concept may ride similar to its predecessors but there are big differences -- including its size and fuel source. The vehicle, which made its debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, is smaller than the brand's current models, measuring 171 inches long, 81 inches wide and 72 inches tall. The HUMMER HX concept also downsized its fuel-consumption, running on a 3.6L V6 engine that can burn E85. General Motors reports three designers, fresh out of school, sketched the vehicle before it was put into production. The vehicle also features a built-in, forward-facing camera that drivers can use to record their off-road excursions, and then replay on the monitor located inside the SUV. While the HUMMER HX concept does not include a radio, it does contain speakers that enable drivers to plug in their MP3 players or other similar devices.

CHECK OUT THE CUTE-UTE SMACKDOWN: www.edmunds.com We get it already — fuel prices suck. And while we pity the poor sod who bought a new full-size SUV a few years ago and is now stuck with a fuel bill that has doubled and a vehicle whose residual value makes manure futures look appealing, everyone wants solutions. Sympathy won't heal a hemorrhaging wallet. So what's a utility-lovin' small family to do? Downsize. Full-size SUVs provide unmatched capability but their thirst may make you reassess your needs. Think compact utility vehicle. Think crossover. This doesn't mean you have to downsize your expectations, though. The three compact SUVs we've assembled here — the brand-new 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan and the 2008 Honda CR-V and 2008 Toyota RAV4 — are based on car platforms, a strategy that helps create an efficient utilization of interior space in a relatively lightweight, fuel-efficient package. Simply put, you can pack more stuff inside these compact SUVs than you might think. And being car-based, these compact crossovers offer easier entry and exit and better driving maneuverability than truck-based ones, something you really appreciate when you're running errands around town. Of course, car-based SUVs lack the rough-road capability of their bigger brethren, and you can forget about serious towing. For everyday use, though, a compact ute just makes more sense. LEARN MORE ABOUT TOYOTA HYBRIDS: www.edmunds.com Guy walks into a Toyota dealer — sounds like a joke so far, right? Not quite. Guy walks into a Toyota dealer looking for a 2008 Toyota Prius. He's heard about hybrids for awhile now, and the Prius is one he knows by name. He vaguely recalls some celebrity bragging about taking one to the Academy Awards instead of a limo, and then there was that South Park episode, "Smug Alert" a couple of years back. And didn't Al Gore's own son make headlines for getting busted doing 100 mph in his Prius? Something like that. Beyond the hype, Guy's never really given hybrid cars much thought, much less gone looking for one. And even though he can afford a decent-size car or SUV, the price of gasoline has him looking for fuel economy in a serious way. And there on the showroom floor, Guy sees a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid for almost the same amount of money as a Prius. Now what?

CHECK OUT THE X6 HYBRID SPY ARTICLE: www.edmunds.com First shown as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is now headed for production. Far from a fuel-sipping economy car, this gasoline-electric hybrid is designed to take the edge off fuel costs without giving up much in the way of SUV practicality or performance. Prototypes spotted in Death Valley reveal few significant styling changes from the recently introduced X6 other than an obvious bulge in the hood. Subsequent photos show a maze of electrical connections beneath the protruding sheet metal. All the extra hardware is necessary to control what's expected to be a two-mode hybrid system similar to what's found in GM's current Tahoe and Escalade Hybrid SUVs. BMW partnered with GM and Daimler in the development of the system. The two-mode system essentially combines electric motors with a sophisticated automatic transmission and traditional gasoline engine. It is able to provide pure electric power like a Prius, but most of the time it's a mix of both gasoline and electric power. A fuel mileage improvement of around 10-15 percent is about all you can expect given the added weight of the hybrid system's batteries combined with the X6's already substantial curb weight. With full production of the V8-powered X6 just now starting to ramp up to full speed, the introduction of the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (as BMW calls it) is probably at least a year away. Expect a substantial price bump, one that ...

The fourth generation Discovery 4 was launched in 2009, and went on sale in the United Kingdom on 1 September. Compared with the 2.7 litre TDV6 engine, which continues to be offered on the Discovery 4, the new TDV6 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel engine delivers a 9% fuel economy improvement (EU combined cycle) and 10% lower CO2 emissions, at the same time as increasing power by 28% to 241 bhp (180 kW); torque increases 36% to 600 N·m (440 lb·ft). The results include a 060 mph time of 9.0 seconds, (0100 km/h in 9.6 seconds), a 24% improvement over the 2.7 litre model. The new engine has been optimised for low-end torque as well as economy, making it possible to activate the lock-up clutch of the ZF HP-28 automatic transmission at lower speed. This reduces 'slip' in the hydraulic torque converter improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher torque at lower engine speeds also enables longer gearing for more economical cruising. Land Rover's engineers have also transformed the on-road ride, handling and off-road capabilities. The changes include new suspension components, revised steering, larger brakes, improved traction control, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system, which helps optimise the vehicle for different on-road or off-road driving situations. The exterior design of the Land Rover Discovery 4 has been updated, most obviously with smoother and simpler surfaces at the front, including a new, more aerodynamic bumper. Of course, we still crack the obvious jokes. We'll tell you that these are minivans with hinged doors, SUVs trail-rated for the Starbucks drive-thru, tall wagons that think they're too good to be called tall wagons. But there's nothing superficial or irrational about crossover SUVs like the 2009 Honda Pilot, 2008 Mazda CX-9 or 2008 Toyota Highlander. All three make good on the crossover promise of a vast interior, easy maneuverability and decent fuel economy. Maybe you're aghast that anyone would need three rows of seating, but maybe you've never tried to cram three toddlers in Britax car seats into a Honda Accord. We have. You need that third row. But if that third row were in a minivan, you might find yourself filling a prescription for antidepressants. This leaves you to consider a crossover SUV of medium-to-large proportions. Just about any current-day crossover will accomplish the basics, but the diversity of this vehicle genre might catch you off guard. Even though the 2009 Honda Pilot, 2008 Mazda CX-9 and 2008 Toyota Highlander seem to match one another airbag for airbag, their personalities are so different that you can't drive them without taking sides.

And once again, the upcoming four-door Porsche has left us scratching our heads over its design. Incorporating elements from both the 911 and the Cayenne, the Panamera looks like it's having a hard time pulling off the whole "four-door coupe" idea. The high window line makes it look bulky in profile, while the massive hatchback window does little to slim down the big rear end. We'll assume for now that the car will look far more elegant when all the tape comes off, but for now the Panamera looks like it could take over from the Cayenne as the least attractive Porsche in the Stuttgart company's lineup. Three direct-injection gasoline engines are expected to be offered from the start of North American sales, which now look likely to begin in late 2009. At the bottom end of the scale will be a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 sourced from Volkswagen. Positioned above that will be the Panamera S, with a Porsche-developed 4.8-liter V8 that makes 405 hp. Rounding out the lineup will be the Panamera Turbo, challenging the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG with a turbocharged 520-hp 4.8-liter V8. Mitsubishi starts by massaging the SOHC 3.0-liter V6, lifting output by 10 horsepower to 230 hp while boosting low-end torque. By reprogramming the engine/transmission control unit, the company also was able to enhance fuel economy. To improve handling, the engineers stiffened the suspension and fitted larger Brembo brakes, along with 19-inch OZ Racing wheels and performance tires. The Outlander GT also borrows heavily from the Lancer Evolution, notably the car's mighty Super All-Wheel-Control (S-AWC) system, employing a front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled 4WD coupling to prevent wheel slip and provide greater all-weather traction. The Lancer provided styling inspiration as well, particularly in front, where the Outlander GT features a new grille, front bumper, fenders and hood, as well as reshaped headlamps, new side sills and rear bumper and a polished aluminum roof panel. Mitsubishi used grained, double-stitched synthetic leather and chrome accents in the cockpit, adapting aluminum racing-style pedals and a sport steering wheel from the Lancer Evo. Audiophiles will appreciate the upgraded Rockford Fosgate system, as well as the new FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway, which combines voice-recognition ...

Nissan Juke is set to change the urban landscape... for the third time. Following in the wheeltracks of the Murano large crossover and then the successful Qashqai - the car that three years ago introduced the concept of a crossover as an alternative to the traditional C-segment hatchback - comes its younger brother, the Nissan Juke. Designed to bring a breath of fresh air to the B-segment, Nissan Juke is a distinctive combination of SUV toughness and sporting style. Conceived to inject some masculinity and dynamism into the small car market, Nissan Juke combines a number of seeming contradictions beneath its highly individual lines. Nissan Juke was created at Nissan Design Europe (NDE) in the heart of London, and refined at Nissan's Design Centre (NDC) in Japan. Principle engineering took place in Japan with significant European input and Juke will be built in Nissan's factory in Sunderland in the north-east of England. From a design standpoint, the lower portion of Nissan Juke is pure SUV, with chunky wheels, wide tyres, extended ground clearance and a robust stance. But the top portion is unadulterated sports car, with a high waistline, slim visor-like side glass graphics and a coupé-style falling roofline. The coupé effect is further underlined by the rear doors which have their handles hidden in the frame of the door. Inside, the sports car theme continues with a driver-focused cabin dominated by a centre console design inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank. Finished in ...

The Smart car is getting a lot of attention for its small size and style, and now it's earning impressive crash test ratings. In recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car for sale in the US market, earned the top rating of good for front and side crash protection. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of acceptable for protection against whiplash in rear impacts. Smart Fortwo is classified a microcar, meaning it's smaller even than minicars. Weighing about 1800 pounds, the Smart is more than 3 feet shorter and almost 700 pounds lighter than a Mini Cooper. It weighs about a third as much as one of the heaviest vehicles the Institute has tested, the BMW X5, a midsize SUV. As the price of fuel climbs and tougher federal fuel economy requirements kick in, auto companies are expected to introduce more small vehicles to the market. The Smart is the smallest car the Institute ever has tested. "The big question from consumers is, 'How safe is it?'", says Institute president Adrian Lund. "All things being equal in safety, bigger and heavier is always better. But among the smallest cars, the engineers of the Smart did their homework and designed a high level of safety into a very small package."

www.edmunds.com Honda knows the difference between revision and improvement, and you can see the evidence in the 2009 Honda Pilot. It looks different, only the same. Or maybe it's the same, only different. But what you can't see are the dozens and dozens of places within this utility package where the Honda engineers have fiddled with the details. It's easy to imagine the Honda engineers swarming over the 2009 Honda Pilot, relentlessly improving space-efficiency, utility, fuel economy and performance. It is the Honda Way, the thorough refinement of a mechanical device into a form that is supremely functional, pure and simple. Only these particular Honda engineers are a bunch of guys from Ohio at Honda R&D Americas, and they've tried to make the 2009 Honda Pilot into the right kind of crossover for Americans.
